Gender and it's meaning

 

GENDER is a dynamic term, which changes in time and geographically, as well as in the course of life of every individual. The term “gender” represents socially determined roles of women and men, their responsibilities and opportunities and their relationships.

SEX refers to biological differences between men and women.


GENDER refers to social differences between women and men, i.e. to different responsibilities of women and men in a given culture, time and location. Gender roles are learnt and changed throughout the life.

WHAT IS GENDER EQUITY? 
Women and men have equal opportunities to participate in given situations and to have equal benefits from them. Equity does not promote identicalness of men and women, but respects their rights to differences.

WHAT IS GENDER EQUALITY? 
Women and men equally share the benefits from the activities they participate in.

WHAT IS GENDER INTEGRATION? 
We can say that an institution is engendered (or that gender is integrated in a given institution) when gender equity is reflected in the structure, program, work and practice of that institution.

WHAT DETERMINES THE GENDER? 
Gender is under influence of perception and expectations of each individual, and is determined by following factors:

  • cultural,
  • social,
  • political,
  • economy,
  • class,
  • age and
  • ethnic background.

Gender equality is not exclusively an issue of social justice, but also represents a necessary requirement for social and economic development of a country, with particular emphasis on poverty reduction and improvement of life quality for all citizens.
